SONGWRITER SHOWCASE: YOO SOO KIM OF HEMMINGBIRDS, MARK GOLDBERG-FOSS OF MARCEL MARCEL, LIZA DAY & JULIA KLEE

Homeroom’s Songwriter Showcase emphasizes the craft of songwriting by inviting songwriters from diverse musical backgrounds to perform without a backing band or a full amplifier rig.

Yoo Soo Kim of Hemmingbirds builds melodies that bounce, twist, and stream across a song. He rapidly builds and releases tension as his songs transition from one motif to another — but each has song has a defined arc and theme that often reveal an overall sense of frustration, alienation, and uncertainty.

Mark Goldberg-Foss of Marcel Marcel uses dissonance and a vocal style that moves between apathy and angst to deliver melancholia melodies. His guitar driven music peaks and recedes, and occasionallys find a sense of comfort and peace, if only for a moment. His songs have inflections of humor and disappointment, but also at times convey a guarded appreciation of life and its imperfections.
